Knives Out — Beginner's Guide

Getting started in Knives Out

Knives Out is a free-to-play battle royale: a large group of players drops onto a wide map, scavenges for gear, and fights until one player or team is left standing. A safe zone keeps shrinking over time, forcing everyone closer together. Importantly, paid items are cosmetic — they change how you look, not how hard you hit — so you can be fully competitive without spending.

The core loop

Every match follows the same rhythm. Learn it and everything else gets easier:

  • Drop — choose where to parachute in. Edge towns are quieter and safer to learn in; central hotspots have better loot but far more early fights.
  • Loot — grab a weapon fast, then armor, a helmet, a backpack, and healing items. Pick up attachments (scopes, grips, magazines) that match your gun.
  • Rotate — watch the shrinking zone and move into it early rather than sprinting through danger at the last second.
  • Fight or avoid — you don't need every kill. Surviving into the final circles is what wins matches.

First goals for new players

Focus on fundamentals before chasing wins:

  1. Land, loot, survive five minutes. Just staying alive teaches you the map and item icons.
  2. Learn two weapons well — typically an assault rifle for mid-range and a shotgun or SMG for close quarters.
  3. Get comfortable with armor and healing. Always heal behind cover, never in the open.
  4. Play the safe zone, not the kill feed. Positioning beats aim early on.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Hot-dropping every game. Landing in the busiest spot before you know the controls leads to instant deaths. Drop quieter until your aim is reliable.
  • Ignoring sound. Footsteps, gunfire, and vehicles reveal enemy positions — use headphones.
  • Looting too long. Once you have a gun, armor, and heals, start moving. Over-looting gets you caught outside the zone.
  • Standing still in the open. Move between cover; a stationary target is an easy one.
  • Spending on cosmetics before you've settled in. Cosmetics never affect performance, so there's no rush.

Efficient early progression

Clear daily and event missions when you log in — they're the steadiest source of rewards and free currency without any pressure to pay. Play a mode you enjoy (solo, duo, or squad) consistently rather than jumping around, since muscle memory matters more than any single match. Over a few sessions you'll naturally improve your aim, map sense, and zone timing, which is what actually carries you to more wins.
