Path of Exile 2 — Beginner's Guide

Getting started in Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 is an action RPG built around killing monsters, collecting loot, and gradually building a character powerful enough to push deeper, harder content. Your first job is simply to finish the campaign. Pick a class that matches how you like to play — ranged, melee, or spellcaster — and follow the story zones in order. Don't overthink your first character; it's a learning run.

The core loop is straightforward:

  • Kill packs of monsters to earn experience and drops.
  • Loot gear, currency items, and skill gems.
  • Upgrade your weapons, armour, and skills as better options appear.
  • Progress to the next zone, then eventually into the endgame.

Your first goals

Weapons drive a huge part of your power, so prioritise upgrading them whenever you find a stronger one. Slot skill gems into your gear early and pair them with support gems to add effects. Keep your resistances as high as you reasonably can — getting hit hurts far more when they're low. Always carry healing and mana flasks, and refill them between fights.

Link your movement and main attack to comfortable keys so combat feels smooth. Use the passive skill tree to reinforce one clear identity rather than spreading points thinly across everything.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Hoarding currency items. Many of these are crafting materials, not money to save. Use them to improve gear as you go.
  • Ignoring resistances. Unbalanced defences are the most common cause of sudden deaths.
  • Vendoring everything. Some drops are valuable to other players; learn what's worth keeping.
  • Following a build you don't understand. Guides help, but know why each choice matters so you can adapt.

Progressing efficiently

Move at a steady pace through the campaign rather than over-grinding early zones — experience and loot scale up later, so lingering too long is rarely worth it. Pick up a community build guide for your class once you understand the basics; it saves a lot of wasted resources. When you reach the endgame, you'll unlock a map-based system that becomes the long-term loop, so treat the campaign as your training ground. Above all, experiment: respeccing is possible, and learning what your character can do is half the fun.
