Two kinds of "currency" in Path of Exile 2
Path of Exile 2 has two very different economies, and it's important not to confuse them.
First, there are in-game currency items — crafting materials that drop from monsters and are also traded between players. These are earned by playing and are used to modify and upgrade gear. They are not bought with real money in the normal course of play.
Second, there are Points, the premium currency purchased with real money. Points are used in the cosmetic microtransaction store and for account conveniences. Crucially, the store is not pay-to-win: you can't buy gear, levels, or power. Points cover things like:
- Cosmetic effects — skins, armour appearances, weapon effects, pets, and portals.
- Stash tabs — extra and specialised storage, widely considered the most useful purchase.
- Convenience items — character slots, name changes, and similar quality-of-life options.
Earning vs buying
You earn in-game currency items simply by playing — clearing zones, running maps, and trading with other players. Points, by contrast, are bought directly. There's no efficient way to "farm" Points, so the only real decision is whether and how you buy them.
What's worth spending on
If you spend at all, stash tabs offer the best long-term value because organised storage makes trading and crafting far easier. Cosmetics are purely personal taste — they change nothing about gameplay, so buy them only if you genuinely enjoy the look. There's never any pressure to spend to stay competitive.
Paying less for Points
Points can be bought from the official store, but prices aren't identical everywhere. Trusted third-party top-up resellers sometimes list the same value for less, and regional pricing can vary too. Before topping up, it's worth comparing:
- The official store price for the bundle you want.
- Prices from reputable resellers for the equivalent value.
